Congratulations to our 49er 2022 Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship Recipients

As the end of the year approaches, UNC Charlotte Education Abroad reflects back on the year in which study abroad has returned with the strong return of students exploring educational opportunities around the globe. This past year, Education Abroad has had many success stories regarding scholarship recipients. For the final highlight of 2022, Education Abroad is proud to highlight our recipients from the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)!

The mission of the FEA is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.

This past year, Education Abroad is proud to acknowledge two recipients from the Fund for Education Abroad! Our highest number of recipients to date.

Our first recipient, Mariah Roseboro, is a Psychological Science major. Mariah studied abroad through The Education Abroad Network at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea in spring 2022. Following her program abroad, she continues to share her experience and serves as a Global Ambassador through TEAN and is willing to speak with any students interested in studying abroad through UNC Charlotte.

Our second recipient, Tiara Mitchell, is a BFA Print Media Art Major. Tiara just completed her study abroad program in Spain through the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) in Madrid, Spain for fall 2022.

Read on to hear more from our recipients about what they hope to gain from their experience abroad, and advice to other students applying for scholarships.

The Office of International Programs and Education Abroad congratulate all of the FEA scholarship recipients and their continued dedication to pursue their dreams and goals to learn about different cultures, languages, and people. The Fund for Education Abroad is now accepting applications for the Summer, Fall and Academic Year 2023 cycle with applications due by noon on January 18, 2023.

Q&A WITH OUR RECIPIENTS

Meet our 2022 Fund for Education Abroad recipients!

Mariah Roseboro

  1. Why do you want to study abroad? What do you hope to gain from the experience? Studying abroad was at the top of my “to-do” list for my college experience. I think stepping outside of your comfort zone should be an essential part of your education. As someone who aspires to be a clinical mental health counselor in the future, which will include working with various types of people, I wanted to study abroad to place myself in an all new situation that would expose me to people of many backgrounds. By branching out to study in a completely foreign country, where the people do not look like me and I do not fluently speak the language, I am expanding my understanding of culture and society even further. This experience of studying abroad in South Korea with an affiliate provider that promotes diversity and cultural immersion, will give me even more tools to equip me to become an even more well-rounded counselor in the future!
  2. What are you looking forward to the most in your program and/or host country? I’m looking forward to many things during my time in South Korea. My list of things to do is very long, but I think I’m most excited about getting settled at my home university: Korea University. I cannot wait to learn my way around the neighborhood I live in and begin to feel that this is my second home.
  3. What advice would you give other students applying for the FEA Scholarship? The advice I’d give to prospective applicants for the FEA scholarship, as well as any other scholarship, is to be as transparent as possible. Scholarship funds want to hear about your dreams, your aspirations, your hopes for the future, etc. Advocate for yourself and your dreams within your essays and letters, and find recommenders who have seen your hard work that will also advocate for you effectively. This is your chance to pitch yourself; scholarship funds want to see that you are confident in your plans for the future and that you have reasons as to why studying abroad is essential in that plan!

Tiara Mitchell

  1. Why do you want to study abroad? What do you hope to gain from the experience? I always wanted to study abroad to gain a different perspective on life. I have always been eager to participate in an endeavor that is culturally enriching. I hope to learn another language and expand on adaptability skills.
  2. What are you looking forward to the most in your program and/or host country? The food and arts
  3. What advice would you give other students applying for the FEA Scholarship? Please be open about yourself when applying for scholarships. Allow others to have the chance to know you and comprehend why this endeavor is life-changing or a long-term goal that you are fighting to achieve.
  4. Is there anything else you would like to share? Travel as much as you can. Make friends and be safe!
