Study Abroad, Sustainability, and You

Categories: Uncategorized

As part of the 51st Annual Earth Day celebration, the Office of Education Abroad invites you to consider how we can all work together to create a more sustainable global society. This requires efforts in every aspect of our lives – and that includes study abroad!

Connecting Study Abroad and Sustainability Efforts

When you study abroad, you have the opportunity to explore the both the natural and man-made wonders of our world, whether you are trekking through the Costa Rican jungle, working with local communities in India, exploring markets in Barcelona, or gazing across sand dunes in the Sahara. No matter what sort of experience you are looking for, studying abroad can give you the opportunity to become a global citizen, fully dedicated to improving the state of our planet. As you begin thinking about your program, consider these tips for environmental consciousness and sustainability before, during, and after your experience.

Before Going Abroad

  • Look for programs and/or providers with a sustainability focus
    • Ask questions about their commitment to environmental sustainability, support for local communities, use of recycled or Fair Trade products, etc.
  • Research sustainability and environmental issues in your host destination so you can know what to expect before arrival
  • Ask whether Carbon Offsets are included in the program fees, contribute to a carbon offsetting organization, or develop your own carbon offsetting project
  • Research the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals and consider how you can contribute

While Abroad

  • Take local transportation and walk as much as possible – not only is this more sustainable, it’s a great way to fully experience your local environment!
  • Carry reusable shopping bags and water bottles with you
  • Support local businesses, artists, and restaurants instead of multinational chains
  • Avoid buying kitschy souvenirs that are not made locally
  • Try to buy and eat locally grown and processed food – stay away from the imported peanut butter!
  • Never buy or eat products made from endangered or threatened species
  • Be considerate with water usage, especially in drought-prone areas
  • Take only photos, leave only footprints

Once You Return

  • Continue practicing your green behaviors in your local community
  • Become a Study Abroad Ambassador and challenge future study abroad students to be more environmentally aware
  • Connect with the UNC Charlotte Sustainability Office and seek other opportunities for environmental action on campus
  • Get involved with clubs and organizations with an environmental focus
