Scholarships

Here are just a few examples of study abroad scholarship and grant opportunities for Hispanic and other underrepresented students.

The NCSHP established the The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund to benefit Hispanic students in North Carolina. The NCHCF awards annual scholarships worth between $500 and $1,500 to help students who desire to attend college pay for their education. Scholarships recipients are recent graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino background.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, this program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. This scholarship is strongly geared toward minority students to pursue their academic studies abroad. This scholarship supports students who traditionally have been underrepresented in study abroad, including, but not limited to, students with high financial need, students in underrepresented fields, LGBTQIA+ students, and students with diverse ethnic backgrounds. You can earn up to $8,000 to study abroad!

  • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at a college or university in the United States
  • Must be receiving a Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.

Education Abroad provides workshops to students to prepare their scholarship essays. UNC Charlotte has a high success rate of recipients. Meet a few of our recipients here.

Every year, HSF selects 10,000 outstanding students as HSF Scholars from a broad and talented pool of applicants. Among other benefits Scholars receive, HSF awards more than $30 million in Scholarships annually and, depending upon available funds, HSF Scholars may also be eligible to receive a scholarship, which range from $500-$5,000 and are awarded directly to students.

Fund for Education Abroad

The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting minority, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.

In addition to the scholarships listed above, many third-party program providers offer diversity and need-based scholarships for their study abroad programs. Here are a few examples! (Remember that you must be applying to one of the organization’s programs in order to qualify for their scholarship. Deadlines and applicable terms will vary.)
